Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Dear art lovers, My name is Martina Ledermann. I’m running this course. My profession is a graphic designer, painter and nutritionist. I love to draw natural subjects like plants, trees, fruits, vegetables and a lot more. I have prepared this course for you so that you can see how you can paint beautiful pictures of plants and trees with watercolor pencils and colored ink.

00:01:10:21 – 00:01:33:22

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

The materials you need are drawing cardboard or watercolor paper colored ink in yellow, pink, black, sepia, light green, dark green, rose and orange, two glasses with tap water and a medium sized brush, and a lot of love for painting. Let’s begin.

00:01:36:28 – 00:02:05:07

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Let’s start. Now we want to paint a rose flower. And therefore we use watercolor pencils. Please take a rose one. Now we are drawing the blossom.

00:02:11:03 – 00:03:03:13

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Don’t draw it too straight, Then please take a green pencil and draw the stem. After this we will draw some leaves. We are drawing two leaves.

00:03:06:29 – 00:03:25:21

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now we will paint with rose ink. Take care of the borders.

00:03:29:07 – 00:04:54:22

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

This needs a little time. You need to fill the brush with ink after a while. The spikes are a little critical. Every time, please, close your ink.

00:04:57:11 – 00:05:24:22

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now we will use green ink for the stem.

00:05:28:17 – 00:05:56:25

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

In a later step, people add shadows. A white areas are of for the shadows.

00:06:02:17 – 00:06:30:22

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now we will use a dark green ink just for to paint the shadows. For shadows, please, use always darker colors. Use the same kind of colors for green, dark green, orange, dark orange and so on.

00:06:33:08 – 00:08:52:19

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Never use black for a shadow. You can see it’s a good contrast, but it’s a little bit difficult to find the lines. Here we are. Now we will colorize the blossom with pink ink. You can see the pink ink on the left hand side of the video. This gives a good contrast to the light rose ink. Like you see, you’ll need to fill your brush all the time after painting.

00:08:58:16 – 00:09:51:13

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now, we will paint some grass. We begin with a watercolor pencil and we draw lines of the grass. Please do not make the grass too straight. This must be natural shapes. You’ll see the shapes on the graphic. Try to draw them natural as you can.

00:09:55:18 – 00:10:32:16

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now we will continue with a sponge. It’s a natural sponge. And we will put some ink green ink on this sponge. You will see what we will do. We put the sponge on the bottom of the water color cardboard. This will be the ground of the grass.

00:10:35:03 – 00:11:27:06

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

We will put some green ink for the grass. After this, we will put some dark green ink in a later step for the shadows. So it’s very perfect to the green grass.

00:11:29:26 – 00:11:51:14

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

The advantage of watercolor pencils is that you will not see them if you are painting with watercolors or if you are painting with ink.

00:11:57:01 – 00:12:14:25

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

For this example, I do not delete these lines. It’s only an example for you.

00:12:19:28 – 00:13:53:07

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Nature has different shapes. They are not straight. There are rounded, winded. Now I put some dark green ink on the brush and I will make some shadows on the right hand side of some leaf. You can see that some of the grass crosses another grass part. So take care that you do not overpaint these areas.

00:13:57:18 – 00:15:20:17

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

For this course example I have used stone paper and not cardboard, but it’s better to use watercolor cardboard. And now comes the part with the sponge. I will put some dark green ink on the sponge and you will see what we do. Print the colorized sponge on the bottom of the cardbard. This will give a nice effect. It looks natural. Now we will paint a flower, a large flower.

00:15:20:17 – 00:16:03:04

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

We start with watercolor pencils, like you’ll see. In the middle will be yellow color and the blossom will be orange. I draw some leaves around the flower blossom. Like you can see. I always make natural shapes. This is very important. So your drawing looks natural.

00:16:05:18 – 00:18:34:26

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now I use the brush. I clean the brush. We use yellow ink. Later we will also use sponges. Now we use orange ink for the blossom. Later we will make some shadows on the blossoms. You can see, that you do not see the watercolor pencils. It’s great. These are great pencils. Now I use sepia. Don’t worry, the shadows will be lighter as you see it in the moment.

00:18:34:26 – 00:19:23:07

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

We will mix it. I clean my brush and I use orange ink.

00:19:25:09 – 00:20:28:19

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now we will paint the green leaves. Okay. Take care that you don’t overpaint the yellow areas. Paint slowly. You have all the time. With another kind of paper as stone paper I use, You have a little other effects of the colors. You can use cardboard for example. Watercolor, cardboard or simple drawing cardboard how ever you want.

00:20:33:27 – 00:22:52:01

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

I have many stone paper and so I used the stone paper. Now we will use the dark green ink for the shadows. Now we use a sponge. So this gives a real effect of nature of the flower. Now we use yellow again for the middle part. Normally you need to wait a while for to dry the color. But in this video, I didn’t wait because I don’t want to interrupt all the time.

00:22:58:03 – 00:23:46:00

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now we paint some darker color. Now we start with three trees. We paint the leaves with the sponge. On the sponge is light green ink. Later we will make some shadows on it. Important for a natural look is also that you paint different sizes of trees. That not every tree has the same size like the other.

00:23:47:03 – 00:24:41:10

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

You’ll see there is a huge tree, a smaller tree, and a very small tree. I put some dark green ink on a sponge and I put a sponge on the paper at the bottom part of the trees. This makes your painting also more interesting. I clean my brush. Please do so all the time. If you use another color now, we will paint the stems.

00:24:41:10 – 00:25:55:17

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

The roots are very important for a tree. Now we are painting mushrooms. We start with yellow ink and like you can see I’m painting mushrooms. Different mushrooms in different sizes. A huge one. Make it big. Big. Looks good. And a bigger one. This is the biggest of all. Later we will make some shadows on it.

00:25:55:17 – 00:26:48:20

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

And center is a small one. You’ see it, it is only a half of a mushroom. Now I use a mixed color. It is yellow and sepia, very little sepia and a lot of yellow ink. You always have to think about from where comes the light. Your light source. The light source comes from the left in this case. So shadows are on the right hand side.

00:26:48:20 – 00:27:55:08

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

I still use a stone paper like before. The plastic bowl you see is where is the ink is for watercolor painting. Now we use the sponge and paint some of the ink on the paper in the areas in the white areas between the mushrooms. We will create the ground. Now I clean my brush and I use light green ink on a sponge. The sponges do not need to be huge or big.

00:27:56:16 – 00:29:27:16

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

You can use a small sponge part. Now you can see that the ground looks more natural. For plants and trees, the trick with the sponge is super. These are great kinds of possibilities how to make natural shapes. Of course you can use any sponge you want, but this one has very natural shape, because it’s a natural sponge.

00:29:27:16 – 00:29:57:04

Martina Ledermann, Lecturer

Now we give a more natural look to the mushrooms.
